549,00 € iva inclusa
Pictograph on canvas, ‘Essential’ category. Original work: circa 1918–1919, New York, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
Description
The work, created by Amedeo Modigliani in the final years of his career, depicts a young man in a half-length portrait, commonly identified as a student. The figure, captured in a frontal position, stands out against a neutral background, devoid of descriptive elements, which accentuates the centrality and solemnity of the subject.
The elongated face, slender and sinuous neck, and eyes without pupils are recurring stylistic features in the artist's mature pictorial language. The highly stylised rendering of forms is accompanied by a warm, earthy colour palette, which contributes to giving the image an intimate dimension, suspended between idealisation and introspection.
The young man's expression is enigmatic, detached, almost hieratic. The absence of direct gaze creates a sense of psychological distance which, far from alienating the viewer, encourages contemplative involvement. This tension between form and emotional silence captures the distinctive feature of Modigliani's portraits: the desire to capture the spiritual essence of the subject rather than their physical likeness.
The work bears witness to the extraordinary stylistic and poetic consistency that characterises the short but intense career of Modigliani, a leading figure of the so-called École de Paris and the European avant-garde of the early 20th century.
