Amedeo Modigliani, The Artist's Wife
549,00 € iva inclusa
Pictography on canvas, ‘Essential’ category. Original work: circa 1918–1919, private collection
Description
The work depicts Jeanne Hébuterne, Modigliani's companion, in a pensive and melancholic pose, which has become iconic in the painter's oeuvre. The female figure is rendered with the artist's usual stylistic characteristics: an elongated face, almond-shaped eyes without pupils, a slender neck and sinuous lines, which contribute to giving the figure an almost abstract dimension, suspended between idealisation and introspection.
The face, devoid of marked expressiveness, becomes an emblem of interiority and silent grace. The colours are soft and earthy, with warm, rosy tones that shape the figure without forced lighting, in keeping with Modigliani's essential and refined formal language. The background is bare, treated in a flat manner, aimed at enhancing the centrality and intensity of the subject.
The work fully reflects the artist's mature style, characterised by a combination of aesthetic primitivism, decorative linearism and psychological research, elements that give his portraits a distinctive and universal character.
