Description

The work depicts a couple surrounded by darkness, in a room illuminated only by a ray of light coming from a window partially covered by a curtain. The two hug each other tightly, until they lose their identity, when they mix into a single a shape devoid of distinctive features. Art critic Roberta Smith underlines how Munch favored "long brushstrokes [...] that more which when painted look like stains".
