Perugino, Nativity

Description

The Nativity (Adoration of the Shepherds)

Framed within the perspective architecture of the Hall of Audiences in the Collegio del Cambio, the Adoration of the Shepherds stands out for its extraordinary intimacy and serene, suspended atmosphere—a hallmark of Perugino’s mature style. The scene is set beneath a grand classical portico opening onto a vast, golden Umbrian landscape. At the center, the Infant Jesus lies on the ground as Mary and Joseph kneel in silent devotion, embodying the ideal harmony that would profoundly influence the young Raphael, who was working in the Master’s workshop during those years. A fascinating feature of the work is its balance: the ethereal grace of the central figures harmonizes with the rustic realism of the shepherds, seamlessly bridging the divine with everyday human life.
